This week on Apt613 Live, we play some music from this year’s Bluesfest, Karen interviews Greg Searle from Harvest Noir, the guys behind 327 Wine Bar on Somerset. And we do it all without the guiding hand of Ryan or Trevor. Despite our impediments, we prevail, delivering wacky humour and informative, earnest discussion.

It’s a bitter sweet Apartment613 Live this week. We devote the entire show to Ottawa’s weekly arts and culture paper, the Xpress. This week’s issue of the Xpress is the final print edition and, we learned this evening that the Xpress website will also soon be shutting down. It’s the end of an Ottawa institution and we devoted an hour of radio to a feature-length chat with Guillaume Moffet, Editor in Chief of the Xpress; Ben Welland, Xpress photographer; and Fateema Sayanti, former Xpress Editor in Chief and culture columnist and contributing editor at Ottawa Magazine.

It’s a not-to-miss tribute to our favourite weekly. Thanks to all the writers, photographers and editors that made the Xpress great. You’ll be missed.

For this week’s show we plan music from both Fevers and the Sound of Lions, who are playing a tribute show to the Xpress this coming Friday at Mavericks. The show will also feature some favourite photos from Ben Welland’s years of shooting the local Ottawa cultural scene.

This week on Apartment613 Live, Ryan Saxby-Hill and Trevor Pritchard reunite to co-host the show and celebrate International Women’s Day. Ryan and Trevor show their appreciation for the women in their lives and celebrate by bringing in some fantastic women to talk about everything from beer to music and local trivia.

Do you love beer enough to put it in your salad? Turns out it’s possible and delicious. Ryan chats with Caroline Isshi from Zen Kitchen to talk about their upcoming beer-paring dinner with local-brewery Broadhead Beer. If you can’t make it out to the event, they discuss how to match one of Ottawa’s great local brews to a delicious home-cooked meal.

Megan Bocking drops in from the Bytowne Museum to give Trevor and Ryan a quiz to lead up to the museum’s St. Patty’s Day trivia event. Play along to see how much you know about Ottawa and gauge your chances for the trivia night next Sunday at D’Arcy McGee’s.

Trevor plays a variety of music, including some local acts who are going to be playing Zaphod’s as it celebrates its 20 year anniversary. Music expert Emma Godmere stops in to chat local music, reminisce about shows and talk about the importance of Zaphod’s in Ottawa’s music scene.

You can catch Apartment613 Live on Thursdays from 4-5pm on CHUO 89.1 FM.

This week on the podcast, Karen has company when her co-host and fellow Apartment613 editor, Ryan, returns to talk about their new favourite food, waffles. They talk their favourite toppings on the delicious new waffles at Pressed. If you’ve ever wished to swap your maple syrup for gravy, then these waffles may be for you.

Karen and Ryan interview Mike Bulthuis and Mike Steinhauer, the editors of the new blog Vaniernow.ca. They explain why they love their neighbourhood and you should too. Later on, fellow editor and co-host Trevor, drops by to interview Michael Brian from Toronto-band, Zeus. You can catch Zeus playing at the NAC on February 11 with the Sam Roberts Band.

Karen and Ryan preview music by Megan Jerome, who you can see this Saturday, February 4, at Café Paradiso for Ottawa Winter Jazzfest. The music stays local with songs by Ottawa acts Sounds of Lions and the White Wires. Keep listening to hear music by Kathleen Edwards and Hannah Georgas, who are playing at the Bronson Centre on February 9.
