Hey kids!

This is the last show of 2014 and we’ve jam packed it with interviews and music this week. To start things off, I interview Fraser Mackay, a guide with the Ottawa Haunted Walk’s special tour this month, The Nightmare Before/After Christmas, which runs for the next two weekends.

Then Trevor Pritchard catches up with the folks at Kichesippi Brewery to talk about their green practices.

Finally I sit down with our Librarian in Residence, Jessica Green, who shares her holiday book ideas – either something you can sit down and read or perhaps that perfect gift for someone on your list.

I look forward to reconnecting with you in the New Year. Watch for us in our new time slot - Tuesdays at 6pm on CHUO 89.1 FM.

Hey kids!

This week on Apt613 Live we’re bringing you an interview that speaks to the spirit of the season.  Steve Beauchesne is a co-founder of Beau’s All Natural Brewing Company: an Ottawa favourite whose ever-evolving flavours can be found on-shelves and on-tap at LCBOs and bars around Ontario. Yet Beau’s is more than just a brewery: they’re working with a creative business model that allows them to give until it hurts-without hurting profits.  I chat with Steve about Beaus’ innovative approach to charity that goes beyond writing a cheque.

As if that wasn’t enough I’ll regale you with one of many tales of my Christmas-mishaps past and bring you some music from folks performing around Ottawa in the coming days.

So turn up the volume, get out the nog and enjoy this week’s Apt613 Live!

Hey kids-and welcome to December!

I don’t know about you but I’m very excited to flip that page on my calendar (yeah, I’m kickin’ it old-school with an actual paper calendar hanging on my wall). We've arrived at that magical time of year when smiles seem easier, folks seem friendlier, and when gee whiz it’s okay to let loose your inner child.

This week on Apt 613 LIVE we’re highlighting two very cool events taking place this weekend:

Fryquency is celebrating its one-year anniversary over at Mugshots this Saturday November 6th. They’re the folks behind a regular series of events that shed a well-deserved (and much needed) spotlight on otherwise underexposed experimental and alternative Canadian music. I sat down for a chat with co-organizer Rachel Wheldon to talk about what we can expect to hear and see at this weekend’s celebration.

We also sample a little somethin’ somethin’ from Tale of a Town. Charles Ketchabaw and Lisa Marie DiLiberto hail from the Toronto-based not-for-profit theatre and media company FIXT POINT. This year they’ve decided to pack up their ‘storymobile’ and embark on a cross-country journey: stopping here and there along the way to collect stories from local folks that they then transform into performance installation pieces addressing the heart and soul of each location’s history and ever-evolving identity.

Plus, as always, plenty of music from acts like Cocorosie, Motel Raphaël, Viva Mars and more (much more).

So sit back, relax, and enjoy the smooth dulcet tones of yours truly…and guests. I guess the guests are pretty smooth too.

Hey kids!

This week on apt613 Live I interview Angie Diack, owner and instructor with The Dirty Smock to chat about crafting in Ottawa, where she gets her inspiration, and what kind of workshops she’s hosting for the holiday season.  Musical offerings include Buck 65, Sloan, John Carroll and a host of other folks who’ll soon be taking the stage in Ottawa.

As a side note: I mentioned Jill Zmud off the top of the program but due to technical difficulties (I am so not 'of my generation’) I was unable to play one of her songs.  Zmud is a local talent and her latest album “small matters of life and death” is up for the Contemporary Album of the Year award at this year’s Canadian Folk Music Awards which are taking place at the Bronson Centre this Saturday November 29th. You can check out her fantastic folk sound at her website http://jillzmud.com/

In other Ottawa-loving news: have you had the chance to check out Lunch Out Loud yet? If not then get your keisters over there!  Hosted by Nick Bachusky and Andrew Miller this is a weekly who’s-who and what’s-what for the capital region.  Similar to apt613Live! these guys are dedicated to getting the scoop on Ottawa happenings and sharing it with listeners in the 613. You can check ‘em out on Facebook OR follow a link from apt613 Live’s podcast each week. Double the podcasts-double the fun!

Check out this week’s episode featuring Chefs Proulx (Zen Kitchen) and LaSalle (Albion Rooms) and music from Eric Gilmore and the Mad Hatters!

Thanks for listening!

Due to the events in downtown Ottawa which occurred on Wednesday, October 22nd, 2014, we were unable to go live on the air for our usual radio broadcast on CHUO 89.1 FM.

That being said, I had three wonderfully generous interviewees lined up this week to tell us about their upcoming events going down in the Capital. You can’t keep a good man/woman/city down! So please take a listen, stay strong-and my heart of course goes out sincerely to all those affected by what occurred.

Tarantino Unchained is an event taking place at House of Targ next Wednesday, October 29th, 2014 at 9pm. It’s a fundraiser for Jer’s Vision that invites all participants to costume-up as their favourite Tarantino character, to dance a little and, best of all, to give a bit at the door (and the pinball machines) to a worthy cause. I had the chance to sit down with organizer Wendy Lee to chat a bit about what to expect.

Velo Vogue is an Ottawa-based bike-loving blog dedicated to fashionable folks who choose pedals over petrol. This is my interview with organizer Zara discussing the blog and the upcoming Velo Vogue hosted event Plaid Parade happening Sunday, October 26th, at 11am.

There are many stories in Twin Peaks — some of them are sad, some funny. Some of them are stories of madness, of violence. Some are ordinary. Yet they all have about them a sense of mystery — the mystery of life. While you might not resolve in a single evening the mystery of life, Victoire’s Welcome to Twin Peaks art show is sure to inspire, at the very least, some deep contemplation of all things inexplicable (thanks David Lynch). Join them Thursday, October, 30th, 2014 at their Wellington location for some art, fashion and delectable treats all inspired by the soon-to-return cult classic!

Here are the tracks we played:
Down in Mexico by The Coasters
Ghost by The Creeps

This week Ryan kicked the show off with an interview with jazz singer Renée Yoxon, who is playing the NAC Fourth Stage as part of the Winter Jazz Festival next weekend.

Next, I spoke with JP Fournier about this year’s edition of Winterbrewed, a beer festival that’s taking things indoors this weekend to avoid the cold.

And Francois wrapped the show up for us with an interview with Bear Witness of recent Juno nominees A Tribe Called Red.

For our return to the air after the holiday season, Adria brought you a piece on why some local business owners work and play in Ottawa.

And I was joined by Slice & Co. proprietor Warren Sutherland for a chat about his new pizza and beer tasting options.

Finally, we were proud to air Silkken Laumann's brand new album Not Forever Enough in its entirety. The band launched the album on New Year's Eve, and you can snag it for free at their website.

Here are the tracks we played on the show:
Hilotrons - My Number
Souljazz Orchestra - Battle Suite
Fevers - Dance Cry Dance
Silkken Laumann - Dubai, Bye Baby, Dubai

Karen and Michaella started the show off with N-Product founder Dominic Coballe, who was featured on our Apartment613 Talks panel about 3D printing. Dominic and his partners are proponents of the Slow Goods movement, and their creative work with wood and other mediums is really interesting. With the holiday season quickly approaching and our Support Local Month still in progress, I can’t think of a better place to spend your money.

It’s craft show season, and during last week’s Weekend Roundup Karen counted no less than six local craft shows this past weekend. So it was a good opportunity to talk to Krista Leben from Urban Craftabout this season’s offerings.

Here are the tracks we played on this week’s show:
Arizona - Seas
Family Tree Evening Hymns
The Halifax Commotion Hilotrons
Tap my toes Andy Shauf

This week, Adria was joined by DJ Memetic for the entirety of the show. Memetic is one of the masterminds behind Timekode, one of Ottawa’s longest running DJ nights. Timekode is having its eighth anniversary today, so Memetic took us through the history and evolution of the night. We’ve also officially entered the season of the craft fair, and our hosts rounded out the show with a look at what’s new and exciting in the world of crafty gatherings.
